Project Primark Belfast

Safe One makes its mark at new flagship Primark store

We have supplied the award winning Stamisol Safe One breather membrane for the £100 million renovation of the iconic Bank Buildings on Belfast’s Royal Avenue, which houses the city’s flagship Primark store.

Overseen by main contractor, Bennett Construction, the refurbishment was required after a fire in August of 2018 which gutted the interior of the 237-year-old heritage listed building and left the feature façade badly damaged. Designed by JCA Designs LTD, the complex project has restored the building’s original structure and created 88,200 sq. ft. of brand-new retail space. Stone and marble on the new façade were sourced from quarries in Finland, Scotland and
Portugal, the same quarries which supplied the materials for the original
structure in the 18th century.

The long-awaited reopening of Primark at The Bank Buildings in Belfast
took place in November 2022, officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Belfast,
Councillor Tina Black. The retailer has created almost 300 new jobs at the
larger store.

It is fantastic to have made Belfast a home again and to have opened a shop that is bigger and better than ever before. The restoration of the Bank Buildings has been a passion project for Primark, working in partnership with Belfast City Council and a great team of craftsmen and traders.

Award-winning Stamisol Safe One Membrane A2 used for complete fire safety at Cardiff Transport Interchange building

Our Safe One Breather Membrane was selected by JCA Designs and installed by D Harkin & Co Roofing. The product protects the long-term condition of the building envelope with high water vapour permeability to control and remove condensation inside the building. The system also has a W1 water tightness rating, a 7000mm water tightness rating, a Euroclass A2,s1-d0 fire rating and excellent UV resistance of 5000 hours. This outstanding combination of features was recently recognised when Safe One was awarded Product of the Year at the Façade 2022 Design and Engineering Awards.

It is pleasing to see how Safe One has met exceptional demand in the façade refurbishment and renovation of high-rise buildings in city centres. Its award-winning safety and performance features are second to none in the UK market. Professionals such as D Harkin & Co Roofing have been quick to recognise these qualities and use Safe One's all-round protection for prestige and heritage projects. The Euroclass A2 rating was a particularly important factor in driving demand and it seems especially relevant to the Primark refurbishment given the building's recent history.

A new need for fire safety

In buildings higher than 11 m or high-risk buildings, where mobility may be an issue, fire-fighting control and evacuation is only possible to a limited extent. In order to develop future-oriented concepts in fire safety, the façade membrane is an essential element when incorporated into a wider fire engineering strategy.
