Hammersmith Town Hall – A2 Breather Membrane for Civic Landmark

Interested in discovering more? Take a look behind the scenes

Stamisol Safe One supports modernisation of civic landmark in West London

As part of the ambitious redevelopment of the historic Hammersmith Town Hall in London, Stamisol Safe One breather membrane was specified to provide a high-performance solution for the external building envelope. The Grade II-listed landmark is being refurbished and extended as part of the wider Hammersmith Civic Campus masterplan.

The £155 million project is being delivered through a joint venture between Hammersmith & Fulham Council and A2Dominion, with construction led by Ardmore. The scheme includes over 15,000 sqm of state-of-the-art office and public space, 204 new homes and more than 10,000 sqm of commercial premises, all designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners.

A striking feature of the development is a contemporary three-storey ‘glass box’ extension, suspended on 15-metre-high stilts above the original Town Hall. Constructed using 1,300 tonnes of structural steel, this additional 4,500 sqm of internal space also includes a new glazed lift and link bridges within the enclosed courtyard. The Civic Campus is designed to be one of the most inclusive and environmentally forward-thinking civic buildings in the UK.

Breathing New Life into Hammersmith: 2000 sqm of Stamisol Safe One Powering a Bold Civic Vision

To meet stringent building performance and safety requirements, Stamisol Safe One was supplied via specialist distributor Insulation Online Ltd. The membrane delivers excellent breathability, UV durability and water resistance, making it particularly suitable for complex façade projects and renovation of listed structures. It features:

  • W1-rated water tightness
  • 7000 mm water column
  • UV resistance tested to 5,000 hours
  • Euroclass A2-s1, d0 fire classification (aged-tested and certified)
  • High vapour permeability to manage internal moisture

A new need for fire safety

In buildings higher than 11 m or high-risk buildings, where mobility may be an issue, fire-fighting control and evacuation is only possible to a limited extent. In order to develop future-oriented concepts in fire safety, the façade membrane is an essential element when incorporated into a wider fire engineering strategy.
