Project Cardiff Central Square

Safety for the "new gateway to the capital of Wales"

Stamisol has supplied Safe One, the UK’s most advanced breather membrane, for a key phase at Cardiff Central Square, a flagship development from Rightacres which is delivering new civic and recreational space described as "a new gateway to the capital of Wales".

Designed by Holder Mathias Architects, the Cardiff Transport Interchange building is integral to the connectivity which is fundamental to Rightacre’s vision for Cardiff Central Square. One of the largest developments undertaken in Cardiff city centre, the mixed-use project comprises 500,000 sq ft of new space, including the 14-bay bus interchange with a covered concourse, 318 apartments for the private rented sector and around 90,000 sq ft of contemporary open-plan offices.

ISG have been appointed as the main contractor overseeing the £ 89m project to construct the Cardiff Transport Interchange. ISG has been working with roofing and façade contractor, Britannia Site Solutions, on the installation of Stamisol Safe One breather membrane to provide high-performance water repellence combined with high water vapour permeability to control condensation within the building envelope. Stamisol Safe One is the only breather membrane in the UK which combines a W1 rating for water tightness, breathability to BS5250 standards and a Euroclass A2 limited-combustible rating, going above and beyond the fire safety standards required under post-Grenfell building regulations.

Award-winning Stamisol Safe One Membrane A2 used for complete fire safety at Cardiff Transport Interchange building

The selection of Stamisol Safe One for this project has enabled a remarkable transformation of a strategically important site. This membrane has raised the bar for all-round performance of breathing membranes and the system is increasingly being selected for high profile projects such as Cardiff Central Square. Architects, designers, contractors and installers value Stamisol Safe One's A2 fire protection properties, which meet the stringent legislative requirements for façades, and its ability to meet these safety standards without compromising the breathability and water resistance that are essential to the core function of an open diffusion membrane.

A new need for fire safety

In buildings higher than 11 m or high-risk buildings, where mobility may be an issue, fire-fighting control and evacuation is only possible to a limited extent. In order to develop future-oriented concepts in fire safety, the façade membrane is an essential element when incorporated into a wider fire engineering strategy.
