Project High-rise Building Portsmouth

After detailed and targeted fire risk assessments, the decision was made in favour of Stamisol Safe one.

A £22 million fire safety programme has been carried out in various high-rise buildings in Portsmouth, which goes far beyond the minimum legal requirements through the use of the Safe One venting me

The city council has introduced a range of measures to its residential stock following detailed Fire Risk Assessments which identified areas where improvements could be made to several buildings, including Ladywood House in Somers Town, Nickelby House in Buckland, Handsworth House in Quinton Close and Sarah Robinson House in Queen Street.

Buildings have been retrofitted with new sprinklers and fire doors while façade specialist, All Facades UK Ltd, has replaced panelling made from coated glass reinforced plastic, high pressure laminate and PVC composite. The replacement panels are manufactured from materials which meet a Euroclass A2 fire safety rating in keeping with requirements by law for cladding and other external wall elements. Safe One, which is also Euroclass A2 rated, is being fitted beneath the panels to ensure that the façade upgrade is completed to maximise fire safety.

Award-winning Stamisol Safe One Membrane A2 used for upgraded fire safety at High-Rise Plymouth.

The Grenfell case raised many discussions about the removal and replacement of cladding made of combustible aluminium composite material, also known as ACM. The changes to the external facades on this scheme in Portsmouth show that there are other facade elements and materials that need to be considered on many of the UK's existing high-rise buildings. The work carried out by All Facades UK Ltd reflects a growing preference to not only meet but exceed the fire safety standards set out in current regulations. Breathable membranes are not required by law to have a Euroclass A2 rating, but Safe One was chosen because its A2 classification is consistent with a commitment to best practice in ensuring that every part of the building envelope minimises fire risk.

Safe One offers a combination of high-performance attributes which is unique in the UK market. In addition to a Euroclass A2 rating and a high level of breathability, the system has a W1 rating for waterproofing and an unrivalled water resistance of 7000 mm – an especially valuable advantage for high rise buildings exposed to driving rain.

A new need for fire safety

In buildings higher than 11 m or high-risk buildings, where mobility may be an issue, fire-fighting control and evacuation is only possible to a limited extent. In order to develop future-oriented concepts in fire safety, the façade membrane is an essential element when incorporated into a wider fire engineering strategy.
